Soil improvement between 2022 and 2024 definitely had a big effect on the inherited, self-seeding Mirabilis jalapa. Whereas in the summer of 2023, despite regular watering, they looked practically dead most of the time, in 2024, with a lot less watering, they popped back to life every night and looked splendid each morning.
Mirabilis is one of my favorite “annuals” for making large bushes of very pretty brightly glowing flowers from the middle of June through the middle of October. Mostly in white, yellow, or pink or any combination thereof. And it offers such a wonderful “freshly-washed” perfume in the night and in the morning!
Just toss their small black grenade-shaped seeds where you want them to grow and you will see them come back year after year, regrowing from their large tuberous roots or their seeds.
Mirabilis jalapa comes from dry tropical regions and has become naturalized in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions all over the world.
