I was hankering after a citrus tree and I needed to have something vertical on the terrace… so I planted a clementine tree in a large pot. At the moment I’m not sure whether that was really a good idea or more a bit of plant abuse.
I planted this “Clemenules” (Citrus reticulata, Clementina fina) tree in the spring of 2024. The first year it developed well and besides two mealy bugs in August and some discolored leaves all summer and fall it seemed fine. I squashed the bugs and gave some mineral “supplements” that didn’t really change anything.
This February the tree had developed a massive crown full of branches and twigs so I cleaned it out a bit. In May the leaves were rather pale – maybe due to the heavy rains. In May flowers and tiny fruit appeared and the tree looked very healthy. Later on twisted leaves and aphids appeared and I made a mistake by spraying before the sun hit the tree so some leaves got a little burned. In June the tree let go of quite a few slightly yellowed leaves but as it still has masses of them it does not seem to be a problem. The aphids are under control but the twisted leaves stay twisted of course.
Would it be doing better planted out in the garden?
