Nigella damascena

Nigella damascena

One of my absolute favorites because it is sooo easy to grow and because it is sooo pretty. In late summer or early spring I just toss the seeds wherever I want to fill up an empty spot and throughout May and June I fill up my camera with pictures of these lovely lacy flowers…

Nigella damascena is a native of the Mediterranean region and may have originated in Greece and Western Turkey. Today it grows in gardens almost worldwide and also in the wild in several European countries.

It is very easy to sow, needs no thinning out or transplanting and if the flowers are allowed to dry up where they are, they will re-seed freely without ever becoming invasive or hard to control. It tolerates the sun and drought because it is able to adapt its life cycle to climatic conditions by flowering early here in the Mediterranean and throughout the summer in cooler climates.

I have the “Persian Jewels Mix” in my garden:
