Lychnis coronaria

The friendly and well-behaved sister of Silene latifolia, Lychnis coronaria is found in the wild anywhere between Italy and the Himalayas. It grows on rocky slopes and in dappled woods and copses and in our Mediterranean garden it tolerates sun, heat and drought quite well. Along with the three bright pink plants I put in in 2023 together with lemony-yellow Achillea taygetea, a white variety has spontaneously appeared last year in another part of the garden.

In our garden they bloom from the middle of May until the middle of June and do not flower again, even if the dried heads are cut back.

Lychnis coronaria is very frost hardy and to be planted in light well-drained soil. It reseeds itself quite freely.
