Well, it turns out that Aloe vera is far from an easy plant to maintain in this Mediterranean region.
Outside on the terrace it hated the sun, it hated the rain and when it was in the shade it produced countless offshoots from underneath that crowded the mother plant or toppled it to the side. It was happiest and prettiest in the winter when it was in the unheated guest room with almost no direct light.
After repotting it twice I had had enough and gave it away. The benefits of Aloe vera can also be had from Bulbine and Carpobrotius, two plants that are a lot less complicated…
