Helianthus annuus or the common sunflower is a native of North and Middle America and needs rich soil as well as sufficient water to thrive. I would therefore never have bothered planting it – the birdfeeder took care of that for me. And so for two years running I have had one or two wonderful sunflowers in my garden – without any watering. However, they never grow as tall as they would in less hot and dry regions and they have only a single flower instead of multiples – so they last only for about 3-4 weeks in June-July instead of blooming all summer long. The bees don’t care, they make the most of what is offered, whenever it is offered.
